In the second and last National Poetry Writing Month highlights post, we feature works by Syed Umar Bukhari (@essentiallydonut on Instagram) that are nostalgic, moving, and almost eerie. Thanks for tagging us in these, love!

DIMMED NOSTALGIA

Under the moonlight,
the pain shone filled with our plight.
The moonglow glowed dark,
the repercussion of my hidden scars.
The sunlight reminds me of you,
always you, never me.
The dim-lit cafes and bright homes,
desolate in the absence of their calming core.
The phone screen bangs my head,
a means to search for you.
The letters you once wrote illuminate,
I am left in desire.
I never believed I would miss you again; want you again.
But I do.
I miss you.
I miss our memories.

HOLD ME UNDER

You dragged me down,
into this eerie town.

Holding me down,
I believed I would drown.
Surviving the wreck pushing me down,
I realised it was all I would ever surmount.
Hold me down,
I forget our first argument---it fades-- what else is out of bound?

BURNING ALIVE

The warmth of my furry heart,
the shadow of my fury hands.
The love of my life,
The light of my sight.
You turned me away,
I came running back.
You shut the door on me,
always too busy; I could not stay.
Time poured.
Minutes soared.
Seconds roared.
You came running back,
I was still here.
Always waiting for you to turn around,
always hoping for your hands in mine, a ring to shine, clothes to rainbow fine, a love that sets us
burning alive.
The candles above us flickered, flicker, flickering.
Your eyes reflect the blazing sun of the melted wax.
