What is personal style? Maybe it's difficult to explain sometimes: it's the feeling you get when a particular outfit is "so you." It's the way you wear your clothes, with chunky jewelry, or a faux snakeskin belt, or a choker. It's how you do your hair or your makeup, whether you go glam or natural. It's, well, personal to who you are as an individual.

When I scrolled through Tatum's Instagram page (@txtumx_) I noticed a huge shift in her personal style. A majority of her feed was colorful, but one section was very neutral with lots of blacks, whites, beiges, and greys. I wanted to know what prompted the change with these two very different styles. I wasn't sure if the answer would be interesting or not, but I decided to ask anyways.

Tatum responded enthusiastically when I approached her, and it turned out, she did have a story after all … one I didn't expect, and one that resonated with me: Tatum's style change was influenced by her lifestyle and feelings, sure. But it was also influenced by mental health and mental illness.

"Generally, I think my style reflects my mental state (although this happens without me realising.)" Tatum explained the style shift, "At the very, very beginning of my Instagram I have greyish hair with very neutral tones. I think this happened due to the fact that I was suffering quite badly with depressive episodes and panic attacks, so it kind of reflected the sadness I was feeling at the time. And then once I was kind of out of that mindset this explosion of colour happened! With regards to my white hair in the middle of all the colour I think that reflects how content I was with life. I’m not a great lover of change, and was feeling settled so whites and neutral tones felt best to work with. As of now, I feel everything very deeply with bpd tendencies and anxiety, so I love to express this through just a chaos of colour to illustrate how some days I can be absolutely obsessed with how everything is going, but at the same time it’s a little messy and unpredictable."

This explanation made sense, and deeply resonated with me. I too have had my personal style influenced by my mental health, and I'm sure many other people can agree that they too have  turned happiness and sadness into art or fashion.

At the end of the day, personal style is personal for a reason: only you know the true story behind it, and you are the best person to tell that story. Tatum, thank you for discussing this with me and giving our readers an insight into your colorful look.
